As a Marine, Chuck Lyche spent his tour in Vietnam in charge of a squad of young men living on sea rations and sleeping on the ground in the midst of heavy combat. As many NCOs did, Lyche worried about his men and shouldered too much responsibility for a young man. Even after he contracted malaria and was medevaced out of the field with a fever of 105, Lyche continued to worry about the squad he was forced to leave behind.
This oral history was recorded in Moorhead, MN on August 11, 2017. The interview was conducted by Bob Dambach of Prairie Public Broadcasting as part of the Prairie Memories The Vietnam Years project.

About the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund
In 2008, Minnesota voters passed a landmark piece of legislation — the Minnesota Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment — which provided funding to public television stations serving audiences in Minnesota. Its mission is to help preserve and document the treasures of culture, history, and heritage that make Minnesota special, and to increase access to the natural and cultural resources we all share.
